If you are planning on going swimming over the 4th of July weekend on Long Island, you will need to steer clear of two beaches in Suffolk County. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has closed Tides Beach in Rocky Point and Copiague Harbor Beach in Copiague. The reason the two beaches have been closed to swimmers is because the department has detected unhealthy levels of bacteria in the water. You may still visit the beaches for other activities, but you may not go in the water. Copiague Harbor Beach was already closed for this reason, and remains off limits, whereas Tides Beach in Rocky Point was just closed today.
This may come as a disappointment to some residents and visitors to LI, but there are many other beautiful beaches in Suffolk County which remain open. The department has stated that currently, all other beaches in Suffolk County have been deemed safe for swimming and remain open to the public for all the usual activities. Going to the beach is a very popular way to celebrate the 4th of July, and beach season on Long Island is currently in full swing. It is among the most profitable times of year for local businesses, even with inconveniences like this one. Long Islanders will always find a way to have a good time.
