Many people believe that winter has the highest suicide rate because of Seasonal Affective Disorder, but suicide rates are actually higher in spring and summer. If you want to help someone out who is struggling to cope emotionally this spring or summer, now is your chance. You can volunteer to help out at the Long Island Crisis Center, an organization which helps suicidal LI residents in their times of need. The center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and provides a crisis prevention and intervention hotline.
Volunteers will be able to help out by becoming Counselor Assistants. No previous experience is needed; new volunteers will be trained through the Counselor Assistance Training Program, and the center offers flexible training hours to accommodate the schedules of volunteers. You will need to enroll in three sessions lasting three hours each in the Bellmore office of the LI Crisis Center in order to complete your training. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, visit the center’s website at http://www.longislandcrisiscenter.org/ or call 516-826-0244. The process starts out with an interview, after which you can select a training schedule for May and June. Don’t wait to call since the training sessions are starting soon.
