It’s already mid-October, and we’re coming up quickly on the holiday shopping season, which starts in earnest next month. Black Friday, which follows Thanksgiving each year, is becoming a bigger and bigger day for shoppers—a holiday in itself. Local stores and department stores alike are opening their doors earlier and offering bigger discounts this year. Cyber Monday is also growing however, and many shoppers now turn online to find deals without heading out their doors. That practice directs business and money out of the local economy. And with Hurricane Sandy tough on the economy over the past year, it is more important than ever that shoppers support local businesses during the most important retail season.
The Nassau County Chamber of Commerce recently urged Merrick shoppers to keep their holiday shopping in the community and patron small businesses. “It keeps funds in the community, that’s the reason,” explained Angela Powers of New Hyde Park. “And you get to know your neighbors besides. And keeping the money locally is a very good thing, it makes a community whole.” Despite the presence of big businesses in Long Island communities, small businesses still offer the majority of the jobs—60% according to the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce.
