Kidsave, a nonprofit organization which helps displaced orphans, is asking local families on Long Island and throughout the New York metro area to consider opening their homes to orphans this summer. Families who participate will foster a child from Columbia or Latvia for a month, without the commitment to adopt. “Just giving these children the opportunity to spend a few weeks in the U.S., in a family, can dramatically change a child’s life,” explained Cathee Gelman, Kidsave Coordinator for New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Kidsave hopes that some of the families which foster children as part of their Summer Miracles program will choose to adopt the children they foster. Some hosts also help the children they foster to find another family to adopt them with the aid of Kidsave coordinators. Single adults as well as couples are encouraged to apply to host. Families may have children of their own already or not and still be eligible. If you are interested in helping out, but you are not able to host a child, you can also volunteer to help out in other ways, such as by donating money as a sponsor to the program. You can get in touch with Kidsave on their website.
