A 23 year old kayaker who was sinking in the Nissequogue River on Long Island was spotted by a birdwatcher, who reported his distress to local police. Police officers in rescue boats and helicopters immediately rushed to the scene to ensure the safety of the kayaker. The event took place around 5:45 in the evening, and several different local authorities answered the call simultaneously, including the Kings Park Fire Department, the Nissequogue Fire Department, and police officers from Smithtown. The fire departments and police officers cooperated to save the man.
The kayaker was about 300 yards from the coast, and had been taking on water for some time. “Not sure how long,” stated Mark O’Brien, Kings Park Fire Chief. “We got him onto the boat. He was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.” The kayaker’s name has not yet been released, but he is being treated for hypothermia at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. Exactly how he came to be in the predicament he found himself in is also unknown at this point. But thanks to the quick response of fire departments and police teams, he was salvaged, and assuming he receives adequate medical care, he should survive his ordeal.
