Memorial Day Weekend is one of the biggest events of the year for businesses on Long Island. Tourists from New York City, upstate New York, and surrounding states annually venture to Long Island’s beautiful shores to relax and enjoy the sun and surf on Memorial Day Weekend. This year however, many beaches have been closed for repairs to damaged boardwalks, roads and piers as a result of Hurricane Sandy. This has caused many residents to worry about whether the beaches will be open in time for Memorial Day.
“Our parks and beaches are not only popular destinations for vacationers, but they are also important economic drivers for our communities,” stated New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. “We will continue to work diligently to ensure that these great assets are in safe and good condition for visitors to enjoy this summer.” Beaches which state officials are working to open in time for Memorial Day include Jones Beach (already partially open to the public again) and Robert Moses State Park, where a damaged section of the roadway collapsed into the sea. Local businesses which rely on the tourism will be relieved to know that both beaches and their parking areas should be open in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
