Five fun days dedicated to drawing and painting, with some serious learning thrown in, for young artists yearning to better their skills. The week will end with an art show for family and friends.

Inspired by a visit to the EEA Gallery show Found Objects, campers will create one-of-a-kind treasures using household objects, recycled materials, and who-knows-what-else. Gena Griffiths’ Artist-in-Residence Project
As an artist and an art educator, Gena has been inspired by the innocence of children’s artistic expression. Gena is continually intrigued by the artistic spirit of young people, and it is with this theme in mind that Gena will be creating a three figure sculpture that honors the purity of a child’s creative process. The vision of this work includes three life-sized sculptures emphasizing the mind, the birth of ideas; the heart, emotional motivation; and hands, which produce the work. Through this work, Gena hopes to capture the wonder that is integral to the power of children’s art.
More About Artist and Educator, Gena Griffiths
Born and raised on the North Fork of Long Island, Gena Griffiths received her BA in Art Studio and Art Education from SUNY Potsdam, graduating summa cum laude in 2010. Since her graduation, Gena has been pursuing her goals as an art educator and working artist by being active in the arts community. Gena is currently working as an elementary teaching assistant and substitute teacher with the Mattituck-Cutchogue UFSD as she completes her Masters degree at Stony Brook University. Gena received Second Place Honor in the juried all media art showWomen at the East End Arts Gallery.
Greatly inspired by the abstract work of Kandinsky, Picasso, Miro and Helen Frankenthaler, Gena is drawn to bold color and movement. One of her greatest influences and role models, whom has always stood behind her in all of her endeavors and creative journeys is her mother. An artist herself, her mother gave support and guidance that helped Gena to develop her love of creating art and art education. A challenge Gena looks forward to is how she can continue to pass on this supportive form of expression.
Gena’s most recent works have been motivated by her concern for the living environment and the waste produced by humans. Creating art with children gives Gena an opportunity to broaden their awareness of our changing world and social responsibility.
