ICS Software's Sammy Systems Becomes Available on the Cloud

ICS Software has announced that they will now be offering their premier ARRA certified EHR program, SammyEHR, on the cloud for use by any provider who wants to get up and running right away without worrying about hardware downtime and costs. This announcement completely broadens the horizons of a company that solely relied on a server-client model for more than a quarter-century.

“Working on the cloud is a no brainer,” says Arnold Leyva, Director of Information Technology at ICS. “With this technology, everyone will always be running smoothly because the program will constantly be updated. All you really need is an internet connection and you can use Sammy. This positions us wonderfully moving forward, as this will allow us to begin architecting Sammy as service oriented.”

The cloud is not a new technology by any means, but it’s one that more and more companies are embracing. The cloud, for those who are not too familiar with the terminology, is a way of accessing data by connecting into a remote server whilst completely bypassing most local hardware and software needs. The cloud is ideal for providers who choose to move around from place to place, and also for those providers who do not wish to pay money for hardware and its maintenance costs. The cloud also has the ability to eliminate IT technician reliance, viruses, and the worry that your computer will eventually become too archaic to run simple programs.

Although the cloud seems like a great deal, it does have its drawbacks. For instance, you are a slave to two internet connections—if one goes down, either the internet connection of your office or of the cloud data center, you will not be able to use your cloud based program. Another issue is the security of the cloud. Where is the data being hosted? Is the cloud data center secure? Fortunately, the cloud used by ICS is hosted in the United States and is 100% HIPAA compliant. Providers should weigh the positives and negatives very carefully, especially when their data is hosted.
