Several Huntington councilmen are backing tax rebates for businesses which go green by implementing environmental solutions in the coming years. Mark Cthubertson and Billii Roberti recently stated at a task meeting of the council that reductions in greenhouse gas emissions could mean lower electricity bills for residents and businesses across Long Island. How can businesses reduce their emissions and cut their utility costs? By following the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
If the proposed tax breaks go into effect, businesses would be able to get cuts for following the guidelines and implementing features like solar panels and energy efficient heating systems. Businesses will be rated on a scale as silver, gold or platinum. Property taxes would be cut by 20% each year for the next four years following certification by LEED. There are already a number of LEED certified buildings on the island, including the Brookhaven National Lab Research Support Building, the Tanger Outlet Mall in Deer Park, Hampton Bay Schools, and BNL’s Center for Nanomaterials. As more businesses are certified, they will not only save money on their own operations, but also bolster the LI economy as a whole.
