Last night a guest fell asleep while smoking at the Olympic Motor Lodge on Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, starting a fire. There were no injuries or fatalities reported, but eight guests were forced to relocate, reportedly including several victims of Hurricane Sandy. The Department of Social Services helped to move the guests, consisting of a family of four, another family of three, and a solitary man, to another hotel, and paid for their stay.
The fire started around 8 p.m. on Friday night, and the guest who started it has already admitted to his mistake. The man fell asleep while he was still smoking a cigarette. After waking up on a burning mattress, he tried unsuccessfully to douse the flames. The fire spread to the neighboring two rooms, and caused damage to the interior of the hotel. The investigation is still not complete, and there is no indication yet as to what charges the man might face or what his financial responsibility will be for the situation. Firefighters from Hauppauge, East Brentwood, Central Islip and Brentwood put out the blaze before it could spread to the rest of the motel rooms, inconveniencing or injuring any others in the 17 occupied rooms.
