With the weather forecasted to be dipping into the 40's, there is a real problem with the many displaced residents within the Long Island community. As the winter months begin to creep more and more into our lives, the temperatures are looking to be that the overnight lows could drops to 36, with wind chills of just 28. This means that many people who are still trying to cope without any electricity are going to be looking for a warm place for their families.
The town of Hempstead on Long Island has now announced that they will be opening up warming centers for people to bed down for the night. With many Long Island residents trying to cope the best they can with the cleanup, damage to their homes, and shortage of food, the cold is just one more element that will make it impossible for many to deal with.
These warming centers are short term emergency shelters that operate when temperatures or a combination of precipitation, wind chill, wind and temperature become dangerously inclement. Their paramount purpose is the prevention of death and injury related to exposure to the elements.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that Hempstead has opened 13 warming centers. It also is offering warm showers at an athletic center in West Hempstead. This is a wonderful way for the town to help their residents at this time of paramount crisis.
