The North Fork of Long Island is famous around the globe for producing some of the region’s best wine. To celebrate 40 years as a leading wine region around the world, Wine Enthusiast Magazine hosted a special commemorative anniversary event called Harvest East End 2013. The proceeds from the event are going to East End Hospice, Group for the East End, the Peconic Land Trust, and the Long Island Farm Bureau Promotion & Education Foundation.
The event took place at McCall Vineyard & Ranch on Saturday, August 24th. 42 different local vineyards were represented at the event. Best Cellars founder Joshua Wesson presided as Master of Ceremonies, and chefs from local restaurants like Grana Trattoria Antica and Mirabelle served up delicious cuisine at the anniversary function. As Donnell Stires, executive director of Merliance and associate of the Long Island Wine Council points out, the region has evolved quite a bit since 1973, when winemaking pioneers Louisa and Alex Hargrave first planted their crop. “We’re honoring both John and Louisa at Harvest this year for pioneering the wine and food culture that has developed on Long Island’s East End, and that is so elemental to the area’s emergence as a culinary destination.”
