If you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, there are plenty of options around Long Island that will definitely fill your schedule. Another event that is sure to be a big hit in the Hamilton community is the Hamilton Central High Winter Carnival. This event is a lot of fun for the students and the community. This year, though, they are going to be giving the proceeds of the event to a Long Island school to help with post-Sandy rebuilding.
On Saturday, the Winter Festival will kick off with a 5K walk at the school at 11 a.m., followed by a chicken barbecue provided by the Hamilton Rotary and a volleyball tournament at noon at Hamilton Central School. There will be a handful of other local clubs and organizations hosting games and activities, including a snowman building competition from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 2:15 p.m. Hamilton Theater will host a “pay what you want” screening of “Jack the Giant Slayer” that will also benefit the East Rockaway School District.
Winter carnivals are a great way for communities to come together to enjoy some food, fun, laughter, and a sense of togetherness. I have enjoyed several of these around Long Island and never cease to be amazed at the wonderful work that can be done through them. Helping the East Rockaway School District, which is similar to Hamilton, is a beautiful idea and a show of solidarity between Long Island schools.
Anyone interested in participating in the volleyball tournament has to pay $20 to register a team. The walk is donation driven, as well as many of the other events. So far, through donations from families, organizations and local businesses the district has raised almost $25,000 and hopes to raise even more at the winter festival.
