Sometime during the night on Tuesday, a gunshot was reported at the PSEG Long Island office in Melville. At the time that the shot was fired, there were no employees present at the office. A spokesperson for the Suffolk County Police stated that the bullet was discovered inside a picture frame inside of the office, which functions primarily as a call center for customers. Apparently there were no witnesses to the shot.
Police spent several hours on Wednesday at the office attempting to ascertain information about the gunshot and who might have fired it and why. PSEG officials are working alongside the police to try and get to the bottom of the matter. PSEG assumed control of Long Island’s power utilities on the 1st of January this year, taking over from the problem-plagued Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). Last year during Hurricane Sandy, LIPA failed to restore power to customers in need for days, resulting in harsh criticism. Within days of assuming the reigns, PSEG tackled their first winter storm. On Tuesday, they were faced with another. About 7,000 customers lost power according to spokesman Jeffrey Weir. The average outage lasted for 47 minutes before PSEG was able to restore power.
