One of the more popular sports bars along the southern coast is the Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille. With several locations along Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia, the sports bar is now looking into Yankee territory. The call go to north is being heard as the Greene Turtle looks to drop up to 10 different locations in New York and Long Island.
The mid-Atlantic based restaurant chain has grand visions for expansion out of the region and into other areas of the country. The vice president of franchise business of the restaurant, Tom Finn, said that the Greene Turtle, which opened its first location in 1976 in Ocean City, plans to develop 150 restaurants across the eastern seaboard in the next four to five years.
The first part of this expansion is happening on Long Island in Franklin Square. The new restaurant is going to be set up in an 8,000 square foot building that once housed a Boulder Creek Steakhouse. As construction continues on the building and the transformation into a Greene Turtle, the goal is to have it completed by early 2013.
Franchising brothers John and Jeff Froccaro are developing the 10 Long Island locations. The brothers are not new to the franchise business as they head the Burger Brothers Restaurant Group, which operates 38 Burger King restaurants. This will just be another direction from which they can develop new dining areas along Long Island.
Finn talking about the mindset that the company has stated, “We’ve got a lot of great franchisees but we’ve kind of realized over time that the profile for us is one that has pretty good multi-unit restaurant experience."
And this means big money payouts. The initial payout of a new franchise is between $1.5 and $2 million. For a multi-unit license this would mean a major capital investment.
Along with the 10 Long Island locations, other Greene Turtle locations currently being developed include restaurants in White Marsh, Newark, Del.; and Dover, Del.
