West Islip, NY – “Our daughter Maggie is alive today thanks to the divine intervention and medical technology of physicians, nurses and staff at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center,” said grateful father Ty Bacon. “If she hadn’t been accurately diagnosed and treated for her heart condition, she would not be a happy six-year-old today.”
Ten days after a normal birth Maggie was experiencing severe vomiting and had poor coloring. Her parents, Carrie and Ty Bacon, took her to Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department where a series of tests were done by a pediatric cardiologist on staff. After being admitted for further observation, she was diagnosed by Barry Goldberg, MD, Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in Good Sam’s Center for Pediatric Specialty Care, with critical coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the main artery carrying blood out of the heart that requires immediate open heart surgery. She required emergency treatment to stabilize her which was performed by Dr. Goldberg and his associate Dr. Rohit Talwar.
Since undergoing successful surgery to correct the defect, Maggie has been receiving follow up care at Good Samaritan’s Pediatric Specialty Care Center. The Center is Suffolk County’s largest pediatric specialty center, treating more than 30,000 children with heart conditions, blood disorders, epilepsy, asthma or other conditions each year.
Each year, a group of children who have been treated at the Center for Pediatric Specialty Care, or who have spent time in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) are invited to participate in Good Samaritan’s SamariKids Festival, a free event where children and their families enjoy an afternoon of food, music, games, prizes, gifts and lots of fun. Organized by Good Samaritan staff, with support from local businesses and organizations such as the Long Island State Park Police PBA, Bob Venero Children’s Foundation, Future Tech Enterprise, Inc., the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, Angelica Diaz of Event Works, McDonald’s, Coyle’s and DJ Vinnie Luvera.
“SamariKids provides children who have spent more time with doctors than the average child with a chance to see health care providers outside of the hospital setting,” said Dr. Goldberg. “These children and their families have had their share of treatments and deserve a day of fun.”
