SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL'S FIRST FULL WEEK BRINGS GRAMMY-NOMINATED
and LOCAL TALENT TO HUNTINGTON
Huntington, NY (June 20, 2012) – The Summer Arts Festival, in its 47th year of bringing top performing arts talent to Huntington, will kick off it's first full week with Grammy-Nominated and local talent. Presented by the Town of Huntington and produced by the Huntington Arts Council, the festival offers a high caliber musical journey that is indicative of today's global music scene that extends beyond borders. All performances are free and held on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park, Huntington, at 8:30 p.m. (with an 8:00 p.m. performance on June 30) and Tuesday Family Nights at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, June 26 – Cinderella – Plaza Theatrical Productions All the ingredients that have made this story a perennial favorite are here, including a zany Fairy Godmother, a trip to the Royal Ball and a glass slipper. Cinderella continues to delight audiences everywhere.
Wednesday, June 27 - "STRIKE UP THE BAND!" Join Musical Director Tom Gellert and the Huntington Community Band as they open their 67th Season of Summer Concerts in Huntington's Heckscher Park. This concert will feature a wide array of exciting music, toe-tapping marches and a program guaranteed to please young and old alike.
Thursday, June 28 – Huntington Men’s Chorus The Huntington Men's Chorus has been performing for the town's residents every summer since 1949. With over 100 active singing members, the chorus will perform a delightful variety of songs that demonstrate their strong vocal talent and extensive musical experience.
Friday, June 29 – Sol y Sombra Join Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company for an exciting night of Flamenco and the music & dance of the African Latin/Spanish diaspora with live drummers, singers, guitarists & Oud.
Saturday, June 30 (8:00 p.m.) – Chieli Minucci & Special EFX Guitarist, composer, and arranger Chieli Minucci is the leader of the Grammy-nominated jazz-fusion group Special EFX. A major force on the jazz and world music scene for 25 years and showcasing truly incredible musicianship, Special EFX’s captivating jazz fusion textures and progressive new age twists take listeners on an uplifting musical ride that they’ll never forget. Opening Act - Curtis Haywood - Winner of HAC’s 2012 “Got Talent? Long Island,” Curtis attended the prestigious High School of Performing Arts, Berklee College of Music and is currently pursuing a Masters in Music Therapy at Molloy College in Hempstead. Curtis’ influences are Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum and his namesake King Curtis.
Sunday, July 1 – Senior Pops Orchestra of L.I.The Senior Pops Orchestra of Long Island was established over 30 years ago as a vehicle for senior citizen musicians to express their lifelong musical creativity. Join us for an entertaining evening of orchestral pops favorites.
Founded in 1963, the Huntington Arts Council is a not-for-profit organization that enriches the quality of life of Long Islanders with programs and services that address the needs and interests of artists, cultural organizations and the community. The Council’s programs reach over one million Long Island residents, and the Summer Arts Festival is a free annual event that has earned a reputation for presenting top performances from local, national and international artists.
