Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced today that the state is creating a brand new interagency task force for agriculture. The new organization will include members of the government in nearly a dozen different agencies as well as agricultural leaders in the local economy, and will be called the Strategic Interagency Task Force on Lessening Obstacles to Agriculture (SILO). The changes will impact farmers throughout the state, including on Long Island. There are a number of businesses on Long Island that can benefit from the improvements to the regulations. Much of Suffolk Countyi s dominated by rural vineyards, farms, and orchards.
The members of the task force will collaborate to improve channels of communication between farmers and state officials. They will also identify regulatory issues which are reducing the productivity of farms and which are serving no purpose. Over time, this will lead to a simplification of the legal ordinances surrounding farming. The streamlined system should be a boon to the economy. “Agriculture is vital to the state’s economy,” stated Governor Cuomo, “and by using constructive methods to identify and decrease barriers and leverage industry strengths, we can work proactively to promote growth, create jobs, and support new economic opportunities statewide.”
