Tomorrow is Memorial Day, traditionally one of the biggest days for tourism on Long Island. Long Island was hit hard last year by Hurricane Sandy, and has spent the subsequent six months struggling to recover. Many of the recovery efforts have been focused on the island’s tourism sector since that is such an important cornerstone of the local economy. With the summer tourism season opening up this weekend, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced a campaign to promote tourism on the island, particularly in towns and communities which suffered the most from Hurricane Sandy.
Local officials have already seen to it that roads in key areas have been repaired in time for summer and are working on ensuring that popular destinations are open and accessible. The Long Island Rail Road was disabled in locations after electrical substations were knocked offline by the storm, but service was back up and running south of Lynbrook by November 26th. Long Beach is investing $44 million in repairing its famous boardwalk in preparation for summer crowds. “We want everyone to know that, despite the damage we faced from Superstorm Sandy, Long Island’s summer destinations are back and better than ever,” stated Cuomo.
