Governor Andrew Cuomo has just announced the appointment of a new Deputy Secretary of Public Safety. Thomas P. Abt will be stepping into the position, having previously served as Chief of Staff to the Office of Justice programs (OJP) at the U.S. Department of Justice. Abt was closely involved in the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention, an organization of federal agencies and local community partners for preventing gang violence. He also co-founded the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, designed to take depressed neighborhoods and transform them into places where residents could find opportunity. Harvard University’s John. F. Kennedy School recognized the initiative as one of the Top 25 Innovations in Government. Abt was also a participant in OJP’s Evidence Integration Initiative. Before working in a federal capacity, he was an associate at Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, a law firm in New York. He also worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan.
“I am pleased to welcome Thomas Abt to my administration as Deputy Secretary for Public Safety,” Cuomo announced. “Having worked on national criminal justice issues and initiatives to reduce violence and improve distressed neighborhoods across the country, Mr. Abt brings valuable experience to the New York State government.”
