Despite the fact that texting while driving is illegal, commuters on Long Island do it everyday. In an effort to increase compliance with traffic laws, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced the implementation of new “texting zones” along highways. The idea is that while you are driving along, if you absolutely must send a text, you will see a sign telling you that there is a “texting zone” coming up, and you will be able to safely pull over and send your message.
There will be 91 of these new zones along highways throughout the state of New York. Drivers will see signs saying “It Can Wait,” and “Text Stop 5 Miles.” The signs will begin appearing along highways in the next two to four weeks. From July 4th through September 2nd, officials in the state ofNew York gave out 21,580 tickets to drivers who were texting or talking on their cell phones. The tickets given out in 2013 so far have increased by 365% over the tickets given out last year. “With this new effort, we are sending a clear message to drivers that there is no excuse to take your hands off the wheel and eyes of the road,” said Cuomo.
