Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday that this week will be “Speed Week” throughout New York. No, that doesn’t mean that this week commuters get a license to speed; it means that the New York State Police are going to be cracking down on offenders and implementing new strategies designed to counter speeders and aggressive drivers on Long Island and throughout NY State.
Perhaps a bit ironically, “Speed Week” is occuring at the same time as the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, which takes place at Watkins Glen International Raceway. This timing was not a coincidence. “We are also using this occasion to remind New Yorkers that off the racetrack, speeding will not be tolerated in this state,” Cuomo stated. Commuters on Long Island as well as other areas in New York can expect to see more cops on the highways this week, and should also expect to encounter unmarked patrol cars. While driving to and from your business and leisure activities, you should always observe state speed limits and other road rules, both during “Speed Week” and through the rest of the year, to make driving a safe experience for everyone on Long Island.
