On Long Island and throughout New YorkState, outdoor recreation provides residents and tourists with fun activities throughout the year. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has just announced that the state may add 50 new outdoor access projects to the map. The projects would cost $6 million in total, but would provide tourists and residents with new ways to enjoy the natural terrain of a diverse and beautiful state.
The new areas amount to around 380,000 acres which are currently inaccessible to the public for outdoor activities. Once complete, the projects would allow access for hiking, boating, fishing, bird watching, hunting, and more. “Expanding access to more of the beautiful lands that New York has to offer will open recreational opportunities that for too long have not been available to our residents and tourists,” stated Governor Cuomo. On Long Island, the sites include the Rocky Point Natural Resource Management Area and Kings Park Unique Area, both in Suffolk County, as well as the Otis Pike Preserve, also in Suffolk, and Underhill Unique Area in Nassau. If the projects are approved and completed, they will hopefully draw more tourists and income into the state, leading to a boost in New York's economy.
