Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has just announced that he will be providing over $17 million in funding to outdoor recreation projects throughout the state of New York, through New York Works II and Environmental Protection Funds Investments. The projects will create improvements in a variety of areas including campgrounds, day use areas, boat launch spots, hiking trails and public lands. There will be 27 different projects, which will help make public areas more accessible to disabled people and will upgrade bridges and roads. Educational centers will be improved and information kiosks will be added. $1,300,000, a large portion of the funding, will be going to Long Island, designated as Region 1.
“Improving the infrastructure of New York’s outdoor recreation hot spots will help spur economic development and job creation, boost tourism and strengthen regional economies,” stated Governor Cuomo. “This funding, an important component of our New York Works program, will help upgrade and expand recreation prospects across the state.” Recreation is a major source of income for Long Islanders. Each year, numerous visitors from New York, the Atlantic seaboard region, and the rest of the country and the world travel to the island to enjoy all it has to offer, so this project should really boost the local economy.
