Long Island restaurants specialize in seafood, and fishermen in the area also ship out their catches to restaurants and grocery stores off the island. Long Island is known around the globe for the quality of fresh catches caught off the shore.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced he will be awarding $20 million in grants to fishermen on Long Island to try and help the industry get back on its feet. “The regions most devastated by Superstorm Sandy are also vital parts of our state’s fishing industry, supporting thousands of local jobs and generating billions in economic activity,” the governor stated. “These funds are dedicated to helping this vital industry recover the lsoses they sustained during Sandy, and rebuild stronger than before.” Businesses which have lost more than $50,000 due to Sandy may also be eligible for additional assistance through New York’s small business recovery program.
