Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Health Center Receives Highest Accreditation
West Islip, NY - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Breast Health Center recently earned its second three-year/full accreditation designation following a rigorous on-site evaluation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). An organization run by the American College of Surgeons, NAPBC is dedicated to recognizing those programs in the United States which provide the highest level of medical care to patients with breast cancer. Excellence in clinical management of cases, research initiatives, community outreach and quality improvement efforts at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Health Center were applauded by the team that reviewed the hospital's program.
Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Health Center was created in partnership with the local breast cancer coalitions in 1993 to improve the region's efforts at early detection of breast cancer. Now, 19 years later, the Breast Health Center has grown to its current role. Its multidisciplinary team includes radiologists dedicated exclusively to state-of-the-art breast imaging, who conference weekly with pathologists, breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and a team of genetic counselors. The clinical team discusses each case in detail to allow for broad consensus. Oncology nurses and nurse navigators, trained to guide patients through the complex decision-making process that confronts them, round out the team.
“We are proud and honored to receive this highly-coveted distinction. This affirms our commitment to expertly screen for and treat breast cancer, allowing patients to stay in their community while at the same time receiving the very best in breast health care,” said
Good Samaritan Hospital’s Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology Kenneth Gold, MD.
