New Year's Eve is traditionally a night of revelry and raucous activity. People set aside the night to go out in their best dress, have a great meal at a Long Island restaurant, and party the night away at one of the area's hot spots. I especially love being able to go out with my family and friends to celebrate the New Year in style. Kind of forgetting the previous and looking forward to what is ahead. But, I am always mindful not to get too carried away and spend the night in lockup charged with DWI.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone doesn't want that either. He will announce a crackdown on motorists driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol on New Year’s Eve at a press conference on December 28 at 11:30 a.m. at the H. Lee Denison Building, 100 Veterans Memorial Highway, in Hauppauge.
As a way of enforcing this the Suffolk County Police Department will have extra officers on the street and doing occassional checks of drivers through roadblocks. Officers from the Selected Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team (SAFE-T), Highway Patrol Bureau and all seven precincts will be involved in this initiative.
The reason for this? To keep people safe on New Year's Eve. Nationwide, New Year’s Day is the single most dangerous day of the year for motorists with 78 drunk-driving related deaths annually, a 178% increase above any other day of the year.
If you are going out this year to celebrate the ushering in of 2013 (and the fact that the world did not end a few days ago!), then do it responsibly.
