While Tom and Helene Suozzi may not be the ones that actually do the work at a new Glen Cove restaurant, they are glad to be a part of it. The Suozzi's are announcing the reopening of perhaps that oldest Italian restaurant around Long Island; Stango's.
Relaunched with a little bit of a different name, Stango's at the Orchard, the dining area is one that is both timetested and inviting. Wood tables and chairs, red leather banquettes, red checkered cloths and neutral gray-brown carpeting define this great dining atmosphere, while a large photo of original owners Frank and Concetta Stango, surrounded by pictures of the rest of the clan adorn the walls.
What really sets off the decoration is the Suozzi's commitment to old photographs and history of the community and families. Mini-galleries are spread throughout the restaurant; there's one devoted to veterans, another to the local church and yet another to the Suozzi family, which lived on Grove Street. “We’re inviting anybody who comes to bring black and white pre-1950s photographs,” says Helene Suozzi. Tom, former Nassau County executive and again a candidate for the job also added: “If you want to celebrate old Glen Cove, a family party at Stango’s, bring a picture and we’ll put it up on the wall.”
Gabriel Massaro is the chef in charge of the kitchen, the menu, and the food preparation. On the other end of the kitchen, Phil Labozzetta is the pizza genius. The menu is fantastic as well as priced right. Some of the highlights are fried calamari ($10.95), linguine with red or white clam sauce ($13.95), Stella’s lasagna ($11.95) and Stella’s pork chops with vinegar peppers and broccoli rabe ($19.95).
If you have a moment of nostalgia, want to enjoy some great food, and conversation with great people, and just want to eat at a good Long Island restaurant, check out the newly opened Stango at the Orchard in Glen Cove.
