Smithtown, NY - June 17, 2014 - Girl Scout Maia Gonzalez, 14, of Smithtown, started a mission to achieve the Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award is given to scouts who implement something that has an everlasting community impact, so Maia started a library crocheting club at her middle school. She started teaching other students the art of crocheting and decided to make little hats for premature babies, which she recently donated to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center.
She was very thankful to Librarian Brenda DePetris who allowed her to use the space and teach other students now eagerly participating in the club. “I love teaching and it was a great experience teaching other students,” said Maia. “It’s nice to contribute to a good cause and share. I hope to continue the group through high school.”
Maia presented Michelle Arzu with a pink hat for her daughter Isabella Maria, along with proud grandfather Fausto Rodriquez. “They are so cute—pink is my favorite and now it’s Isabella,” said Michelle.
