Smithtown, NY - March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and St. Catherine Medical Center is dedicated to educating the community about prevention and early detection. “We use this month to dispel a lot of myths,” said Assistant Director of the Colon and Rectal Program Jill Genua, MD. “I am also here to encourage everyone to eat a balanced, low-fat diet, rich in fruits and vegetables—if you smoke, quit today— drink alcohol in moderation and begin a reasonable exercise regime.”
St. Catherine held its annual Digestive Health and Nutrition Day on Saturday, March 9th. The two-hour event offered free screenings to attendees and informational lectures followed by question and answer segments, even one-to-one’s with physicians. Director of St. Catherine’s Colon and Rectal Program Paul Savoca, MD gave an insightful seminar on diverticulitis, and Assistant Director Jill Genua, MD spoke in detail about prevention, early detection, and treatment options for colorectal cancer. Gastroenterologist Robert Lazar, MD, addressed the well known symptoms and treatment options for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Internal Medicine Physician Dara Brener, MD, introduced metabolic testing and weight loss to the attendees, followed by guidelines for optimal nutrition and digestive wellness by registered dietician Christine McDermott, MS RD, CDE.
