Four Long Island men are facing up to $1,700 in fines after posting recent photos to Instagram with a live white tail deer they had captured. The men claim that they were only trying to help two different deer that happened to have gotten trapped in a fence on two different days. They claimed that they released one of the deer, and took the other home, cleaned it up, took photos of it, and then released it. In the pictures, the men have beers, but George Salzmann, 18, of Calverton, insists that they were not drunk. “Probably wasn’t a good idea to take pictures and make a big deal out of it,” Salzmann stated. “At the end of the day, I think I was doing a good deed.”
Authorities found out about the photos of the deer on October 31st. A day later, they spotted the four friends at a Calverton business and interrogated them about the incident, which has been classified as an illegal capture. The four received tickets for the capture of the white tailed deer, which is a protected form of wildlife. They also were ticketed for failing to tag a buck deer head which was found in Salzmann’s home. The deer were not hurt, but authorities say that they could have died from shock. “Deer are wild animals and they shouldn’t be handled by people,” stated DEC Lieutenant Frank Carbone. “It stresses the deer, and it’s dangerous for the people.”
