Alligators aren’t really something you expect to run into in the wild on Long Island. Frank Nasse ran into four of them while drinking a cup of coffee on Friday morning near a Long Island boat ramp. The alligators only measured 2-3 feet in length, so they were not very old. It is likely that they were transported into the state by someone meaning to keep or sell them as pets. According to officials at the State Department of Environmental Conservation, this is illegal. How the four alligators came to be alone and abandoned is unknown. The discovery of the four alligators has prompted officials to hold an amnesty program on April 27th for pet owners with illegal reptiles and amphibians. These pet owners will have a chance to turn over their illegal pets with “no questions asked.”
What will happen to the four alligators that were found by Nasse? State Department officials say they will be giving the four alligators to the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center where they can be properly cared for by reptile experts. This will presumably be the fate of any animals which are turned in by their owners on April 27th as well, though officials have yet to clarify on that point.
