Those in the Seaford area on Monday afternoon may have noticed the massive blaze which engulfed the Hicksville Roadstrip mall. The fire was centered on Island Recreational, a pool and spa store, and began around 3:00 p.m. The fire entirely destroyed the store, but fortunately nobody was reported injured, and there were no fatalities. Stores in the strip mall were evacuated during the fire while firefighters rushed to the scene, and massive traffic delays resulted because of the blaze.
In all, 100 firefighters were needed to put out the flames. Before they were able to get them out, they consumed four other stores in the strip mall. Three hours passed before the huge team was able to get the fire under control and prevent it from spreading farther. Fearing that the fire would spread to the nearby school, administrators were told to keep their students inside until the danger passed. Emergency personnel were able to put out the blaze, but had to remain on the scene to test the air for contamination since Island Recreational stocked chemical products. “We keep taking air quality samples, and so far everything has been negative,” stated Robert Schmidgall of the North Massapequa Fire Department.
