The FBI recently interrogated Britney Smith, 23, a former Long Islander, about her friendship with Boston massacre suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Smith said that she was not surprised to see the FBI waiting at her door since she knew the FBI was aware that she had been close to Tsarnaev’s entire family, but expressed shock and disbelief that he could be in any way connected to the bombings at the Boston Marathon.
“I believe that Dzhokhar is innocent. I don’t believe that he did this. He was just so good of a person, he really was … He was a typical teenager, going to parties, having fun,” stated Smith, and added that the suspect’s family showed her “nothing but love … They accepted me for who I was.” Smith grew up with Tsarnaev’s family, and was good friends first with his sisters, and later with him and his mother as well. Further elaborating on her beliefs about the suspect’s innocence, she adds, “All they’re seeing is two boys walking with book bags when there were numerous people there with book bags.” Investigators asked Smith to see all of her Facebook correspondences with Tsarnaev, and also directed her to have no further contact with members of his family until further notice.
