Today, Farmingdale State College showed off a brand new carport where electric cars can recharge their batteries. The college was able to open the carport thanks to a donation which came from the Long Island Smart Energy Corridor sponsored by the US Department of Energy and other private institutions. The carport was a collaborative effort between the Department of Energy, Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and Stony Brook University.
The new charging station is located near Lupton Hall in one of the main student parking lots. 20 vehicles at a time may dock at the carport, and the energy itself is sustainably harvested through 390 solar panels located overhead. Between late May and late August, the carport generated 35,015 KWh. A car may be charged in the carport completely within three to four hours, and the facility is available to students and faculty members for a $10 refundable deposit every year. The first year, the carport will be completely free to use. “This is a prime example of collaborative research yielding societal benefits,” stated Dr. Tim Killeen, president of The Research Foundation for SUNY. “Modeling the vision of SUNY’s Networks of Excellence, faculty and facilities at two SUNY campuses have partnered with regional and national colleagues to bring about positive and lasting energy innovation.”
