Love the holidays, but wish you could enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas? The Westbury House and Old Westbury Gardens in Long Island are decking the halls in traditional style for the holidays. The Westbury House is an historic residence which was once the home of John Shaffer Phipps, a famous steel heir who lived from 1874 to 1958. “We try to give people the feel for how Christmas may have been celebrated by the family in this house about 100 years ago,” said Vincent Kish, director of the estate. In each of the period rooms, Christmas decorations have been set up along with real trees.
The house and gardens are among the best known destinations on Long Island. The building is stately and elegant, fronting a wide green lawn and some truly picturesque gardens. Families who attend the event will be able to walk through the house and enjoy the Christmas spirit without the commercialism which is so rampant in department stores and other public settings. Santa will be present at the event, and cookies will be served along with cider to keep out the chill. Admission is $8 per person. Seniors and children ages 3-17 may attend for $5.
