One of the most important things that a child can learn in school is to read. When you can take that a step further, and get children to have a life long love of reading, then you have truly done something. Reading is where the imagination bridges with reality, where knowledge expands, and creativity begins. For a school to be recognized for their work with children in building reading skills it is not to be taken lightly.
Assemblymen Ed Ra and Assemblyman Brian Curran joined forces today to congratulate Washington Street Elementary School in Franklin Square for having the most students participate in their co-sponsored summer reading challenge.
Assemblyman Ra, who represents the 19th District, said, "Reading is the cornerstone to unlocking every child’s imagination and creativity, as well as the most essential skill for every person to have. I would like to congratulate the faculty at the Washington Street School for their success in encouraging our children to not only partake in the contest, but to win it. I would also like to thank the students for taking part in the summer reading challenge, as their participation showed the initiative and drive to succeed in education that every child should have.”
As Long Island schools continue to develop their curriculum, make a commitment to educating our children, and look towards the future it is important that administrators keep reading as the cornerstone. Fundamentally, reading, is that aspect of education in which everything else builds upon.
Without reading, there is no science, history, grammar, spelling, writing, and even math. From the wellspring of learning how to read, and enjoying it, children have a whole new world open to them that they can explore, create, and learn.
