History of East End Arts
Established in 1972 as an outgrowth of the successful Woodrow Wilson Humanities Series, East End Arts began as the East End Arts & Humanities Council, a resource for the local arts community with a commitment of supporting and advocating for the arts community. The organization has developed and grown significantly since its start and now operates an Art Gallery and School of the Arts, and presents a variety of events and programs to promote the arts year-round to inspire our communities through support, advocacy and education. East End Arts operates in three main locations: the East End Arts’ grounds in Riverhead, NY; Brecknock Hall in Greenport, NY; and Rosalie Dimon Gallery at Jamesport Manor Inn in Jamesport, NY. Signature annual events include: Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival (May), Teeny Awards (spring), Harvest Gospel Concerts Series (November) and Winterfest Jazz on the Vine (winter). As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, East End Arts relies on public and private foundation grant funding, as well as individual and corporate contributions to continue presenting arts opportunities to our region.
More About the Art Auction at the Fantastic at Forty Gala
In addition to featuring internationally renowned artists’ works, the silent and live art auction will showcase celebrity artists’ “Tools of the Trade” or tools used in the creative process, an utterly new concept in collecting and understanding the world of contemporary art. Through the generosity of some of the art scene’s most prominent figures, including Chuck Close, Bryan Hunt, April Gornik, Eric Fischl, and Lucy Winton, Gala attendees will have the opportunity to possess a piece of art history, a brush or tool from the studio of a famous artist. An old studio axiom says, “The tools are the rules.” With an understanding of the implements and how they are wielded, our ability to grasp the technique and meaning of a work of art is immeasurably enhanced. The objects from the intimate scene of the atelier are also private links to the creative life of the artist, keys to the material culture of the artist’s studio. East End Arts’ Gallery Director, Jane Kirkwood, comments: “The fact that such celebrity artists have donated tools they've used on artwork now at the MoMA or The Whitney to help us raise funds for East End Arts is amazingly generous.”
