(RIVERHEAD, NY, July 18, 2013) –– The East End Arts Gallery is pleased to announce the opening reception for their second annual national juried art competition and show, this year themed H2O, which will open with a reception on Friday, August 9 from 5 to 7 PM. At the reception, the public is invited to view the show and meet guest juror Peter Marcelle and the artists at this free event; refreshments will be served. Guest jurors Peter Marcelle, Director of the Gerald Peters Gallery in New York City, and Owner of the Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY; and Bruce Helander, renowned critic, internationally-known artist and author, White House Fellow for the National Endowment for the Arts, and Editor-in-Chief of Arts Economist Magazine, selected sixty-three artworks from 730 two-dimensional entries from across the U.S. for inclusion in the show. Of the sixty-three pieces in the show, ‘Best in Show’ was awarded to Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear a creation in acrylic on shaped canvas with trompe l'oeil frame by Win Zibeon from Blauvelt, NY. The show will run from the opening through September 27, 2013. The East End Arts Gallery is located at 133 East Main Street in Riverhead, NY. Jamesport Vineyard is located at 1216 Main Road, Jamesport, NY 11947. Artist Statement from ‘Best in Show’ winner Win Zibeon from Blauvelt, NY: “The more I travel the more I see, the more I read, the more I want to tweak the viewer’s vision of his or her world. We all want to live in a perfect world where the water is perfectly clear. We know it isn’t so. Yet so many paintings still portray an idealized view of the world. While I don’t want to shatter the fantasy, I would like the viewer to come away from my paintings and take a little extra time to see their world a little differently.”
Zibeon will receive a 10-day stay in East End Arts’ Artist Residence, plus $1,000 cash, and inclusion in a group show at the prestigious Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY. Additional awards were granted to three outstanding works as well as a number of honorable mentions, including: First Place, to Michael McLaughlin from New York, NY; Second Place, to Cynda Valle from Willits, CA; and Third Place, to Mary Agnes Williams from Philadelphia, PA. Our second annual National Juried Art Show is a significant addition to the important and vibrant art scene on Eastern Long Island.”
