(RIVERHEAD, NY, April 25, 2013) – East End Arts is pleased to announce that the 11th-Annual Teeny Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Southold Junior-Senior High School. The Teeny Awards, conceived from the idea of the Antoinette Perry Awards – The Tony Awards – for Broadway shows, has been celebrating excellence in high school theater across the East End of Long Island since 2002. Through the Teeny Awards program, East End Arts strives to raise the bar on theater education by encouraging increased attendance and community pride at school productions, much like school sports programs. Behind-the-scenes coordination takes place throughout the school year, as volunteer judges attend all high school theatrical performances on the East End to determine the best for nomination, and in June, the winners are announced at the Teeny Awards Gala Ceremony. At the Gala Ceremony, the public is invited to relive some great performances from this year’s shows from the 17 participating high schools in the region, and celebrate the best of the best in East End high school theater! The awards are presented by esteemed community members, theatre professionals, and arts supporters, and hosted by award-winning broadcaster, producer, host and interviewer, Bonnie Grice. On Sunday, June 9, the Red Carpet will begin at 1:30PM in the auditorium lobby, and theCeremony will commence at 3PM. Southold Junior-Senior High School is located at 420 Oaklawn Avenue in Southold, NY. The award nominees will be announced on Wednesday, May 8 at 9 AM on WPPB 88.3 FM on Bonnie Grice’s Eclectic Café radio show.

“We’re thrilled to be at Southold,” said Morgan Vaughan, Teeny Awards Coordinator. “Southold showed true community spirit when it included Greenport students to be in its first show this Fall. We really applaud this kind of camaraderie and encourage it continuing throughout all the school systems. It’s also a great venue and staff. We’re really looking forward to it.”
“And as for having Bonnie Grice emcee, I couldn’t be happier,” Morgan continued. “She’s such a pro that having her host is like having the wind at my back in terms of producing. She’s a tremendous asset to our entire arts community.”
The Teeny Awards recognizes student talent with judging categories such as Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress in three categories of Drama, Comedy, and Musical. Individual awards also go for design categories including Program Art, Set, and Choreography. The coveted “Judges’ Choice” award goes to an exemplary performance or performer and has sometimes gone to an entire cast or play, but it can also go to an individual. A new judging category was added last year: Outstanding Ensemble Production, and a new category, Outstanding Special Performance, has potential to be added this year by the judges, “depending on how things shake out,” Morgan said.
The 11th-Annual Teeny Awards is sponsored by Suffolk County National Bank and Riverhead Toyota.
