East End Arts Presents Word Crafting Workshops
August 2012
(RIVERHEAD, NY, August 3, 2012) – East End Arts is excited to announce a series of writing classes during August 2012 with four notable authors and poets. The Thursday Word Crafting Series takes place at the East End Arts School, located at 141 East Main Street in Riverhead. The cost per workshop is $15 for EEA members and $25 for non-members; advance registration is recommended.
- POETRY OF PLACE: Thursday, August 9, 6:30-8PM. Instructor: Eva Salzman. Come join this workshop if you’re a secret scribbler or just need a nudge to put down on paper your poetry or prose about your corner of this special landscape and its wildlife. Or - since the poet Robert Frost tells us that fences make good neighbors - you could write about a noisy neighbor, a shopping center on Route 58 or the town dump. It’s not what you write about but how you do it. Other tricks of the trade introduced in this workshop include: how to get started and catch the reader’s attention; evoking place; descriptive techniques; and the exploration of perspectives.
- JUMP START ABANDONED POEMS: Thursday, August 16, 6:30-8PM. Instructor: Vivian Eyre. Breathe new life into abandoned, failed or dead poems through free writes and exercises. As a starting point, you’ll revisit old poems, paying specific attention to strengthening first and last lines, language and image. We’ll explore how asking questions and oppositions make poems memorable. For inspiration, the poems of Brenda Hillman, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Nick Flynn and others will be read in class. Bring 4 copies of 4 poems of 22 lines or more.
- FOUND POETRY: Thursday, August 23, 6:30-8PM. Instructor: Anna Katsavos. Found Poetry is the equivalent of both a literary treasure hunt and a collage. Using ordinary language culled from non-poetic contexts, such as newspaper articles, magazine ads, menus, billboards, traffic signs, and even graffiti, workshop participants will reframe seemingly unrelated words and phrases to create surprising compositions. Join Professor Anna Katsavos, Ph.D., for an evening of creativity and fun.
- TYPOGRAPHY: THE LOOK OF WORDS: Thursday, August 30, 6:30-8PM. Instructor: Etta Siegel. Professional graphic designer/educator Etta Siegel offers an entertaining entry into the world of typography. This is not a writing course, per se, although participants will leave inspired with a new awareness of words as art, and the impact of the printed word on the world around us.
