On Monday, the Suffolk County Legislature approved $37,000 in funding for the construction of a new, illuminated crosswalk. The crosswalk will be located in downtown East Hampton Village, and is part of the Downtown Revitalization Program. The village itself will provide the other half of the funding for the project. There is a lot of traffic in this area because this is where many of the town’s restaurants and shops are located. The illuminated crosswalk will help vehicle drivers to see pedestrians who are crossing the street at night, which in turn will make it a safer area for drivers and pedestrians alike.
The crosswalk in question already exists; it is located about 500 feet north of Main Street on Newtown Lane. The new system will use energy efficient LED lights. The wiring will run beneath the street. Pedestrians who want to cross will be able to push a button which will light up the crosswalk. This is not the first illuminated crosswalk installed in East Hampton Village. Two others have already been installed with the assistance of the State Department of Transportation on Main Street. It should take about a week to complete the new installation, which means the upgraded crosswalk should be ready for pedestrians next year sometime before the summer.
