The East End Maritime Museum is pleased to announce its 2013 exhibit The Bays Around Us, a Tribute to Rachel Carson. The exhibit will highlight the winning entries of the “East End Challenge”, presentations that best explore the intersection of science and art. The Challenge is open to all high school students of both the North and
South Forks of Long Island, including Riverhead.
Rachel Carson wrote that “the realities of science are the realities of life itself. We cannot understand the problems that concern us in this, our particular
moment of time, unless we first understand our environment and the forces that have made us what we are, physically and mentally.”
In this spirit, with its particular relevance in the aftermath of recent storms, the Museum hopes to encourage young people to observe and help shape the future of our increasingly fragile Long Island, for that future is theirs.
Submissions should include multi-media or visual images plus a narrative. Considerations for selection include quality, message, inventive observation and creative interpretation of our maritime world on the east end. To paraphrase Einstein, looking at what everyone else is looking at and seeing what no one else is seeing.
Approximately forty entries will be accepted. The exhibit will be in two parts. Part 1 will run from May 24 through August 4th 2013. Part 2 will run from August 9th through October 14th, 2013. Exhibitions will be held at the East End Maritime Museum, Greenport, NY.
The Museum is also seeking sponsors for scholarships and prizes to be awarded to the most innovative projects.
A brochure/prospectus outlining the submission process and deadlines will be available in early January and sent to all high schools in the area. Project advisors will visit schools for clarification.
