Fishermen who harvest shellfish in Eastern Suffolk will be inconvenienced for an indeterminate time period thanks to heavy rains which have been making conditions unsafe for fishing. The runoff water resulting from the rains may make the shellfish unhealthy to consume by carrying pathogens into the waters where the shellfish live. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) made the determination to close certain areas for shellfishing effective this morning.
Which areas are closed? The waters surrounding Southampton, East Hampton and Brookhaven are off limits in order to protect public health. Right now, there is no way to know for sure how long the waters will be closed to fishermen. The DEC will be testing the water regularly to determine whether it is safe and the shellfish living in it are healthy enough to be harvested for human consumption. If you are a fisherman waiting on the DEC to re-open the waters, you can check a recorded message at (631) 444-0480 to see whether the waters have been re-opened. Call (631) 444-0475 for a full list of all the areas which have been closed to ensure that you are not breaking the law while the closures are in effect.
