Sportsmen and businessmen will want to pay attention to what the New York State Department of Environment Conservation (DEC) is up to. The DEC is proposing changes to the current freshwater fishing regulations which govern the activities of fishermen off the coast of Long Island. The changes would eliminate some of the regulations which are in effect currently and which have failed to achieve their intended results.
This is good news for many fishermen in the area. For example, anglers will be able to fish more from certain streams and also enjoy more liberal daily creel limits. Catch and release fishing may be established at a few new streams. Some warmwater angling limits may be thrown out entirely, including both daily creel and size limitations. The looser restrictions should be welcome news to tourists in the area who come to Long Island to fish this summer, as well as many local fishermen who will have the opportunity to increase their catch and their profit. Hopefully the DEC changes will have a positive impact on both the economy of Long Island and the local environment. You may view the potential changes and submit feedback by visiting the DEC website.
