Philatelic Collector Inc., the exclusive postage stamp agent for the Cook Islands has released 2 souvenir sheet stamp issues to honor the Pacific Islands Forum currently being hosted by the Cook Islands on Rarotonga and Aitutaki from August 27 – 31, 2012. Over 50 Countries and International Organizations are represented with delegations and representatives including Hillary Clinton one of the Forums most internationally recognized attendee.
Her visit underscores the importance that the Asian and Pacific islands region are viewed in the world today.
A further souvenir sheet honoring Hillary Clinton’s visit to the Cook Islands will follow in September.
The Cook Islands are a staunchly Democratic nation of 15 Islands in the South Pacific known as “the jewels of the Pacific” and “the heart of Polynesia” with Rarotonga as the capital and most populous island. They are a Constitutional Monarchy and members of the British Commonwealth of Nations under the auspices of New Zealand. Direct flights are available weekly from Los Angeles and daily from New Zealand. Tourism is the lifeblood of the islands and their diverse economy.
Other famous visitors to the Cook Islands include Fletcher Christian of “Mutiny on the Bounty” fame in 1789, Charles Darwin on his “Beagle” voyage in 1835, Robert Louis Stevenson in 1890, Lord Baden-Powell in 1935, Queen Elizabeth II and part of her Royal family including Prince Charles in 1974. In 2006 the “Survivor: Cook Islands” TV show was filmed in Aitutaki. 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of the first European sighting of the island of Rarotonga.
