For most of 2012 Long Island's construction industry was in a decline. It was hard for anyone who was involved in this industry, which employs hundreds of thousands on Long Island alone, it was tough getting a steady paying job. However, due to the damage, and the ongoing clean up and repair of Hurricane Sandy.
The New York State Department of Labor released employment data for December and found that the natural resources, mining and construction sector’s job count fell by 700 jobs compared to a typical decline of around 1,800 jobs. That basically means that more construction workers are retaining employment on Long Island rather than continually searching for jobs.
"Part of this larger-than-normal increase is due to hiring from the Hurricane Sandy cleanup effort,” department of labor market analyst Shital Patel wrote as she described a job count increase of 4,500 between November and December compared to the more likely result of 3,700.
What this means for all of those who are looking for work within the construction industry is to continue searching. There are plenty of opportunities where skilled labor is still in demand. Keep your resume up to date and look at the Job Boards and Jobs Express website. You are sure to find something that you can step into to help provide for your family during a rather difficult economic time.
