The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has just warned customers to be wary of a credit and debit card scam at the ticket vending machines in four of the railroad’s stations. The stations in question include Bayside, Great Neck, Greenvale and Merillon Avenue, where small hidden cameras were found on seven different machines. The cameras were placed under a black metal strip on top of the machine with adhesive that blended in quite effectively. The surreptitious cameras have of course been removed from the machines, so there should be no danger to future customers, but customers who purchased a ticket at any LIRR machine recently should take action to make sure they are not the victim of a credit card scam.
If you used one of the LIRR machines recently, or plan to use one soon (investigators are still checking all the machines on the lines), it is recommended that you check your account balance and call up your bank or credit card company and inquire whether there has been any unusual account activity. You may also want to set alerts, and if anything unusual happens, you will want to call up your bank immediately to put a hold on your card and replace it.
