In recent years, several states have been considering increasing the legal driving age. The reason for the interest in this subject is done in an effort to make the Long Island roads safer. This is because there is currently a very high rate of automobile accidents amongst drivers under the age of 21. It is believed by many that if the driving age were increased there would be a decrease in these accidents.
There are other efforts which have been put in place to decrease the amount of auto accidents amongst young new drivers. One of these efforts is the “Driving in the Safe Lane” program. This is highly acclaimed programed is partnership between the community and the school system to help create safer young drivers through education. Parent groups, law enforcement, and medical and business groups work with the schools to bring this program to several high schools.
The program educated teenagers about driving safety and specific legal issues related to driving. Topics such as parental liability laws in New York are discussed. Medical experts discuss topics such as how to identity problems such as risky behaviors and ways to correct them. They also discuss the neurological basis for typical teen behaviors.
Police officers offer detailed information regarding Learner’s Permits and the Junior License program. They also explain the Graduated Licensing Law for NYS. They explain the procedure for how to switch from a Junior License to a Senior License. They also explain the DMV points system and instruct teens as to what they should do if they are pulled over by the police.
Parents are given information regarding how best to insure their teens in conjunction with their current car insurance policy. They are also given information about money saving tips and the insurance company points system.
Parents and teens are told personal stories by parents who lost their child in a teen automobile crash. These parents detail how the crash has affected their families and how it could be avoided by others.
