City of Long Beach Announces Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) Program

Long Beach, NY – The City of Long Beach, in conjunction with the Long Beach Police Department, is proud to announce the implementation of the Long Beach Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) Program.

In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, internet access and telephone service was lost throughout the City, leaving emergency services unable to contact households with vital information regarding food, water, and shelter. While first responders acted heroically, the City is always looking to improve its response plan in the case of future emergencies.

“The NET Program will become an integral part of the City’s overall strategy for preparing citizens for disaster and supporting emergency response to such events,” said City Council President Scott J. Mandel. “The NET Program aims to prepare our community with the skills needed to be safe and effective when disaster strikes, with a priority placed on the improved and efficient dissemination of information in an emergency situation.”

Consisting of Long Beach residents, the NET Program will educate volunteers about emergency preparedness and allow them to assist within their own neighborhoods following a disaster. NET volunteers will be prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster, and will ensure that every household receives important emergency information.

A NET volunteer is anyone who is active and involved in the community—or wants to be. The NET Program will connect volunteers with a network of fellow volunteers all working together for a common cause: the well-being of our neighbors and our community. The program will create partnerships with existing community groups that have demonstrated long-standing commitment toLong Beach and its residents.
